Playa Hermosa is located 5 minutes south of Jacó and is the beach town of a surfer’s dreams! A
The quiet town is made up of a few nice, privately run hotels, restaurants and homes that are
set around the beach and in the mountains that backdrop the town. There are no large hotels
or resorts clogging up this area with super tourism.
Hermosa holds around 3 miles of unbroken beach. So, a person can just about always find
a spot to surf in solitude if they wish; even during the busiest times of the year. The dark
– almost black – sand beach angles down steeply into the ocean, creating many different
heavy pitching peaks of beach break that a surfer can choose from. The wave requires an
intermediate to advanced skill level due to strong currents and wave heaviness most of the
year. There are a few months however, when it is calm and beginners can surf Playa Hermosa.
Travelers can live in calm tranquility in a small town like Hermosa. And spend their days
swinging in a beachfront hammock and watching parrots fly by, living out of the hustle and
bustle, but having the conveniences of Jacó only 5 minutes to the north.
Every Saturday, the popular Back Yard Bar and Hotel hosts an afternoon surf contest. Some
of the area’s top surfers come to compete as well as the occasional international professional
special guest. Back Yard is also known for its Wednesday night ladies night party.
For some of the best brunch around the Central Pacific Coast of Costa Rica, you can stop by the
Green Room Café Tuesdays through Sundays. Located on the property of the Sandpiper Hotel,
the food is fantastic, the price is right and there is breezy oceanfront cabana seating. Delicious
and affordable dinners can be found just up the road at Vista Hermosa as well.
